From chic to antique in Tacoma

Seattleites may be familiar with Antique Row in Tacoma, but there's more than tchotchke-filled shops here. The pedestrian-friendly area that includes the Theater District makes for a nice day trip and change of shopping scenery. You'll find everything from estate jewelry to the latest in pricey denim in this historic section of town.

Stop in almost any shop and ask for one of the handy little neighborhood maps to guide you. Here are a few of my favorite stops.

King's Books
This no-frills converted warehouse is a book lover's paradise, with more than 150,000 used, rare and out-of-print books, and two cats. Watch for events such as Banned Book Week.

Mineral
Owner/jewelry designer Lisa Kinoshita showcases her ever-evolving jewelry line in a small but striking gallery setting. Kinoshita designs organic jewelry, from antler earrings cast in sterling silver to necklaces with dramatic oversized stones. She also has as an intriguing collection of mounted insects, bones and natural objects.

The retro look of Dame Lola.

Dame Lola
The '40s ambiance here is cherry, and the owner super sweet. She stocks her retro-style boutique with contemporary clothing and accessories. This season you'll find wide-leg jeans from Paige, flirty dresses by Miguelina, Klub Nico Brazilian wedges and sparkly multicolored gemstone jewelry by Seattle designer Lauren Schwarz.

Rocky & Coco's
This sleek and modern clothing store caters to both men and women. Go here for a great denim selection (including 7 For All Mankind and True Religion), James Perse T-shirts and shoes from Report Signature.

Glenna's Clothing
This is truly one of the best, most pristine vintage stores I've seen. The clothing, shoes, handbags and other accessories span decades. Pieces run the gamut from classic and tasteful to groovy and kitschy. The collection of rhinestone jewelry is amazing. Be sure to search all the cases in the store.

Learning Sprout
Wean your little tyke off the tube with imaginative toys. This store carries a plethora of board games, including Blokus, Goblet and Maask, science activities, star gazers, Groovy Girl dolls, puzzles and dress-up clothes.

Fibers Etc.
Knitters go nuts in this shop filled with luxury fibers. You'll find all the knitting tools and accoutrements you need to whip up a cozy sweater.

Sanford & Son Antiques.

Sanford & Son Antiques
This fascinating and rambling store is touted as the largest (three levels, 25,000 square feet) antique and vintage shop in the Pacific Northwest. Browse through architectural remnants, antiquarian books and knickknacks. The middle level now houses individual and diverse shops that sell items such as Moroccan imports, antique kimonos and accessories, clocks and candy.

The Ruby Collection
This cavernous space is amazingly homey, which makes total sense since the store stocks highly embellished furnishings. Think tasseled silk pillows, fancy ottomans and luxury bedding. In the mix you'll find furniture, lots of lighting, blankets, throws and antique goods.

To refuel while shopping, try one of these spots.

Over the Moon Cafe
This is an atmospheric spot perfect for lunch. Sip a glass of wine and enjoy soups, sandwiches and fresh salads.

Vin Grotto
A hip little spot that serves lunch, dinner and tasty diversions such as cheese plates and antipasti.
